Tucson, Arizona is a magnificent place and there are sights and events here that you will not see anywhere else in the world. It is a very popular tourist location, but because there is such fabulous terrain, Tucson mountain biking is renown.
Although there are many different areas where you can go Tucson mountain biking, there are a few in particular that are definitely worth exploring.
Tucson Mountain Biking
One of the best trail areas to go Tucson mountain biking is the Santa Rita mountains. The trails here offer scenic desert riding on jeep trails and single track. Here you will get a great look at the Elephant Head as you ride past it. The trail crosses open desert and there is very little cover, so be prepared for lots of heat and little shade.
In terms of skill it changes occasionally all and it is a good ride for building endurance, but there are not many steeps or slopes, so it is perfect for everyone. The 6 mile and 4000 foot elevation climb to the towers, should only be attempted by experienced mountain bikers, so do not attempt this if there are younger children or lesser skilled bikers in tow.
The Tucson mountains are also very popular for Tucson mountain biking and the most widely ridden trail here is the John Krein Trail. This particular trail climbs to a peak with a beautiful 360 degree view of the gorgeous Tucson Mountains.
The trail is a long and challenging ride, one that should only be attempted by experienced mountain bikers. It includes some of the best single track in the Tucson Mountains and starts with an easy warm up across the desert east of Old Tucson which, although not the most challenging, is definitely hot and arid, so again be prepared for these climate conditions.
Be Prepared
Besides wearing the proper clothing, it is important to come prepared with the right mountain biking equipment. Your choice of bike is the first and most important step and this means getting a quality bike that is durable and able to stand up to rough terrain, but also one that is appropriately sized to your body.
Protective equipment, such as a helmet, elbow and knee pads are very important and ensure your safety enabling you to really enjoy your Tucson mountain biking experience.
